Ahmed ElKashef – Head of Scientific Committee

He is a psychiatrist and holds a Certification by the American Board of Addiction Medicine. He completed his internship and specialization in Psychiatry in South Carolina and Maryland Universities in 1990. Then, he acquired the fellowship in Psychiatry and Neuroscience from the National Institute of Mental Health in 1992 and became a senior fellow of the same institute. In 1997, he joined the National Institute on Drug Abusewhere he was in charge of the clinical tests in Drug Development until 2010. He holds the position of Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine in George Washington University. His Psychopharmacology researches and publications concentrate on the psychological effects of drugs and medicines prescribed for addiction, neurobiology, and mental diseases.

Samya Al Maamari

She received her education in UAE and graduated from Sharjah University with Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2003. In 2007, she got her Master's Degree in Quality Management from Wollongong University - Dubai. She further pursued her academic career and got another Master's Degree of Public Health Degree Program in Healthcare Management and Leadership, a program developed specially for students from Abu Dhabi, from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2011. Currently, she is working on her Ph.D. thesis for the same program in the same university. She held many positions including Renal (Kidney Diseases) Unit Head in Zayed Military Hospital in Abu Dhabi and Nursing Acting Deputy Director in the same hospital.

Ahmed Y. Ali

In 2002, he joined Abu Dhabi Rehabilitation Center as a founder member supported with his Bachelor's Degree in Medicine and Surgery, fellowship and membership of the Royal Institute of Psychiatry. Currently, he holds the position of Consultant Psychiatrist and Psychiatry Section Head. In UK, he worked and had training on psychiatry program in the Faculty of Medicine in Saint George Hospital o London University from 1997 till 2000. He held the position of Research Fellowship in the Faculty of Medicine, supervised the Theory of Mind Course and an examiner of Psychiatry from 1996 through 2000. Be became member of Royal Institute for Psychiatry in 2001and was selected for the fellowship of the same institute in 2013. With his specialty in Smoking Cessation Clinics in particular, Dr. Ahmad contributes regularly to this field with reliable articles. He collaborated in an international initiative of writing and publishing the magazine 'Smoking Prevention and Cessation in MENA 2012'. He also participates regularly through media in raising the public awareness on addiction. Currently, Dr. Ali works as the editor of 'Psychotropic Substances Abuse Treatment Review' which issues in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and he is a fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine.

Shamil Wanigaratne

Dr Shamil Wanigaratne is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Senior Advisor to H.E. Director General at the National Rehabilitation Centre, Abu Dhabi. He is Adjunct Professor at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, United Arab Emirates University and Visiting Associate at King's College London.

Until April 2011 he was Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Head of Clinical Psychology for Addictions at the Maudsley Hospital London. He has worked as a psychologist in the field of Addiction since 1987. He has conducted research and published widely on psychological aspects of addiction. He was a founding member of the British Psychological Society's Faculty of Addiction and was its Chair from 2000 to 2001. He is a Director of Samutthāna, the King's College London Resource Centre for Trauma, Displacement and Mental Health in Sri Lanka. He is a member of the Presidential Task Force on Psychosocial Wellbeing in Sri Lanka and Honorary Consultant to Mel Medura Addiction Treatment Centre. In 2011 in recognition of his of his contribution to his field and profession, he was elected as a Fellow of the British Psychological Society.

Mohamed Abdul Azim Al Sayyed

After he had got his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Ain Shams University-Cairo in 1980, he joined Paul University & Tennessee in the United States where he got his Master's Degree in Empirical Psychology in 1983 and another Master's Degree in Science, Information and Communication from the Higher Studies College in 1988. Then, he moved to Howard University in Washington where he got his Psychology Doctorate Degree in 1993. His academic journey was culminated with another Doctorate Degree in Clinical Psychology from Forest Institute ofProfessional Psychology in the Unites States. During his long professional and academic experience for more than 30 years, he was given several international memberships and licenses notably the membership of American Psychological Association and American Academy of Health Behavior.

Doaa Nader

Dr. Doaa Nader Radwan.
MBBch, MSc, Arab Board, MD.
Dr. Radwan has joined the National Rehabilitation Center in Abu Dhabi in 2014 as a consultant psychiatrist in addiction field. She completed her residency and master's degree in neurology and psychiatry (MSc) (2003) and medical doctoral degree (M.D.) in psychiatry (2007) in the Institute of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt which is a WHO collaborating center for research and training in mental health. She is currently appointed as an assistant professor of psychiatry in the same institute. Meanwhile, she finished the ISAM (International Society for Addiction Medicine) Exam for addiction specialization (2005) and the Arab Board for Medical Specialization in Psychiatry (2005).
She had training courses on research in the Institute of Psychiatry, the Maudsley's (Health Service and Population Research Department Summer School) King's Collage London in 2010 and another one on medical statistics in mental health in 2016. She also joined the training program in Health Research Ethics (2013-2014), in the University of Maryland, Baltimore, USA.
She participated in many research projects and few clinical trials and has publications in peer reviewed international, regional and national journals. She contributed as well to international and national congresses by oral and poster presentations. She received the Egyptian Psychiatric Association (EPA), the Okasha Award for young Psychiatrists and researchers 2008 and the WPA (World psychiatric association) fellowship for young psychiatrists in 2011. She is an active member of the WPA, EPA (European psychiatric association) and ISAM (International Society for Addiction Medicine) as well as an international fellow to the APA (American psychiatric association).

Mansour Mabrook Shawki Abdul Hamid

Following his graduation with Bachelor's Degree in Medicine from Assiut University in 1998, he completed his Master's Degree in Neurology & Psychiatry from the same university in 2003. He received a scholarship of a training course on addiction treatment 'Integrated Chemical Substances Abuse Program' and won an award for the Best Research in Psychiatry within the category of young psychiatrists below 40 years old in Egypt. In 2009, he completed his Ph.D. in Psychology and Addiction from Assiut University. He conducted researches, wrote and published several articles on addiction treatment in international reviews. He also took part in international workshops and conferences on the same topic. He held several key positions including consultant and lecturer on Addiction Psychology in Assiut University.

Gregory Bunt

Dr. Gregory Bunt graduated medical school in 1983 from NYU School of Medicine, and completed his residency in Psychiatry at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1987. He was among the first to complete the Fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry at NYU School of Medicine (1989), and has since been on the NYU Medical School Faculty in the Division of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, currently as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with Special Added Qualifications in Addiction Psychiatry. Dr. Bunt is the Immediate Past President of the New York Society of Addiction Medicine and currently the President of the International Society of Addiction Medicine. He has been the Medical Director for Daytop Village and Daytop International for 25 years. He has authored over a dozen publications, and speaks nationally and internationally about addiction medicine and therapeutic communities.

Kathleen Brady

Dr. Brady is an experienced clinical and translational researcher and has been conducting scientific investigations and clinical work in the field of addictions and psychiatric disorders for over 30 years. Her research focuses on pharmacotherapy of substance use disorders, comorbidity of psychiatric disorders and addictions (e.g., posttraumatic stress disorder and bipolar disorder), gender differences and women's issues in addictions, and the neurobiologic connections between stress and addictions. She has received numerous federal research grants and has published over 300 peer-reviewed journal articles and co-edited 10 books. She is the principal Investigator of MUSC's Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA), Principal Investigator of the Southern Consortium Node of the NIDA-funded Clinical Trials Network and Director of MUSC's Women's Research Center. Her dedication to furthering research careers has attracted a number of junior investigators and clinicians. She has mentored over 25 individual NIH funded faculty development awards (K-awards) and is presently involved in three institutional faculty development programs (CTSA KL2; BIRCWH, NIDA K-12). She has been the Co-Director of MUSC's IDA NIH- funded post-doctoral fellowship program focused on translational research training in addictions for 15 years.
